This proposal is a housing solution based on a structure prototype which aims to ‘test’ the options for integrating procurement and construction techniques, and questions the current Fire Regulations for timber frame housing beyond three storeys.
Based on a repeatable 10m x 10m spatial module, the structural layout uses reciprocal frames to define “living spaces” which have full accessibility and are reconfigurable depending on the occupants lifetime needs. The integrated multiple service voids allow for flexible arrangements of the plan. The variety of orientation for each of the terraces maximises sunlight penetration to each space.
Built with a kit-of-parts, the timber members can be assembled and disassembled due to the simplicity of the reciprocal frame joint benefits the circular economy.
As this prototype works as apartments in a housing block or Urban Infill, it lends itself to many different procurement models for affordable housing, based on rent or ownership.
